This Advanced Rescue course will provide students with the skills and knowledge required to participate in rescue operations as a member of a rescue team; particularly specialist vertical rescue operations. Typically, personnel performing these roles have completed induction or recruitment training and are commencing work as a member of an operational team. They will work under supervision in a team but may be responsible for completing singular tasks relating to a rescue.

This course includes a range of vertical rescue situations, preparing and responding to rescue situations, assessing rescue scenes, establishing vertical rescue systems and performing in and terminating rescues. This course is often an industry requirement for employment in the wind sector, particularly wind turbines.

This includes a wide range of rescue and environmental situations which may incorporate industrial, rural, bush and extreme environmental conditions, to undertake vertical rescues in a range of emergency situations in natural and manmade environments.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Refresher face-to-face contact time of at least 16 Hours
Face-to-Face face-to-face contact time of at least 24 Hours

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
  • PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation has a pre-requisite requirement of HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (only if undertaking training related to the fire sector*). 
  • Physical and psychological capacity to safely participate in practical training and assessment activities across a range of rescue environments, but predominantly vertical rescue. This may include activities such as entering, exiting and working in restricted and/or elevated environments; climbing, crawling, lifting, carrying or dragging equipment or simulated casualties; wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), including harnesses and other rescue equipment and; operating in potentially challenging conditions (e.g. low light, confined, noisy or physically demanding environments)
  • Protective slip resistant footwear/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment.
  • To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
    • Learning: Can follow instructions and apply rescue procedures to keep myself and others safe in stressful situations
    • Reading: Can read emergency signs, maps, or written instructions to help determine where to go or what action to take.
    • Writing: Can write down simple details about what happened during an emergency, like when or where something occurred.
    • Oral communication: Communicate clearly and listen carefully when receiving or giving instructions, especially in team-based, noisy, or time-sensitive situations
    • Numeracy: Can use numbers to understand distances, times, or order of steps during a rescue.
    • Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources

*The fire sector is those sections of government departments, statutory authorities or organisations that have a responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Performance tasks: 

  • Scenario 1 - Prepare and respond to a rescue
  • Performance Task 1 - Prepare and perform a vertical rescue
  • Performance Task 2 - Perform a vertical rescue with a stretcher using industrial fall arrest systems and devices

Documentation – The student must complete all documentation according to the required standard:

  • Risk Assessment
  • Rescue PPE and Equipment form
  • Vertical Rescue Plan
  • Incident Report

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must successfully complete all assessment questions.

Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.
Learning I can follow detailed rescue procedures and apply what I’ve learned to help others in high-risk situations.
Reading I can read and follow maps, signs, and rescue gear instructions to plan and complete a safe rescue.
Writing I can write clear notes or reports that explain what happened, what actions I took, and the outcome.
Oral Communication I can speak clearly and listen carefully to share instructions or updates during rescue operations.
Numeracy I can use numbers to check distances, equipment limits, timing, or other details needed for rescue planning.
